Narcolepsy is a condition that causes intense daytime sleepiness and can lead to sudden onset of sleep. Some people also experience other symptoms, such as muscle weakness when faced with strong emotions. These symptoms can have a serious impact on daily life. People with narcolepsy have difficulty staying awake for long periods of time. When narcolepsy causes a sudden loss of muscle tone, it is called cataplexy. This can be triggered by a strong emotion, including one that provokes laughter. Narcolepsy is divided into two types. Most people with type 1 narcolepsy experience cataplexy. Most people with type 2 narcolepsy do not experience cataplexy. Narcolepsy is a chronic condition with no cure. However, medication and lifestyle changes can help manage symptoms. Support from family, friends, employers, and teachers can help you cope with the illness.
